Travel Day – Oct 17th, 2019: DEPART USA

Bus to NYC Airport will depart from Hamden at TBD (sharp). If you can not make it to the Hamden meeting point by that time, you will have to have your own transportation to JFK. Our flight TBD with Alitalia Airlines to Rome will depart at TBD (US time) and arrive in Rome at TBD (Italian time) the next day. Meals and refreshments will be served in flight.

Day 1 – Oct 18th, 2019: ARRIVE in ROME – CASTEL MONTE – GARGANO (SAN GIOVANI ROTNDO)

Arrival as mentioned above. Once luggage is retrieve on own, we will meet and proceed to our motor coach. Before long we are on our way. After check-in, you will have free time to explore the area but don’t unpack. This evening, enjoy a lovely dinner at the hotel (Welcome Dinner). (D)

Day 2 – Oct 19, 2019: GARGANO – TRANI- CASTELLANA GROTTE (ALBEROBELLO)

This morning, we depart our hotel and head for Castellina Grotte (Alberobello). Along the way we will make 2 stop. First being the visit to the San Pio Shrine – home of the beloved Padre Pio, recently cannozied into Sainthood. From there, we travel to Trani, a beautiful port town that was once the possession of Venice. Trani’s origins date back to early Roman imperial days. Its historical notes begin in the 9th century, during the time of the Lombard and Byzantine dominations. In later centuries, it was under the rule of Normans, Germans and Aragonese. Today, Trani is a prosperous fishing town with a lovely port and a beautiful pedestrian only piazza. Lunch will be on your own. At dinner-time, we tour of an 11th century Masseria (fortified farmhouse) with a tasting of olive oils from their ancient olive trees and enjoy dinner at the Masseria – a typical country house. Day 3 – Oct 20 : ALBEROBELLO

After breakfast, this morning, we visit Alberobello, where we find a village of one-thousand fairy-like Trulli - round white houses with tall conical roofs. Our local guide will explain their mysterious origins and why people continue to build them. The balance of the day will be to enjoy your surroundings. Lunch will be on your own. Tonight, Dinner at the Hotel. (B/D)

Day 4 – Oct 21, 2019: ALBEROBELLO-OSTUNI-ALBEROBELLO

This morning, after breakfast, we will be joined by our Local Guide for an ALL DAY excursion starting with a visit to the famous caves – “Grotte di Castellana” located at the entrance of the Itria Valley, which began forming 90 million years ago. The beauty of the caves attracts tourists from all over the world. Our next stop will the Ostuni, one of the most beautiful hill towns in Puglia, is white, all of it – the houses, shops, churches, streets – set under a deep blue sky and perched on a hill overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The upper historic center is a maze of twisted lanes and staircases, homes constructed one on top of another, and arches that seem to hold it all together before spilling out into an enormous square full of bars, shops and restaurants that is the lower town. Lunch on your own in this beautiful town. Tonight, dinner on your own. (B)

DAY 5 – Oct 22nd, 2019: ALBEROBELLO-MONOPOLI-CELLINO SAN MARCO

Today, we depart bright and early, after breakfast, from Alberobello and travel to the beautiful hotel of Cellino San Marco – a hotel and spa for the next 4 nights. Along the way, we will stop in Monopoli – who’s name belies its Greek origins - "monos polis" meaning unique city. We will meet our local guide and learn more about why Monopoli is so unique. It is not only a bustling city with a commercial center but it still retains its charming historic center and fishing tradition. After some free time to enjoy lunch on your own, we board our motor coach and head toward Cellino San Marco. Tonight, we will enjoy dinner at either the hotel. (B/D)

Day 6 – Oct 23rd, 2019: CELLINO SAN MARCO-LECCE- OTRANTO- CELLINO SAN MARCO

This morning, after breakfast, we board our motorcoach for a full day excursion. Our first stop will be the ancient Roman and Byzantine town of Otranto, the easternmost point on the Italian peninsula. We will be taken through the 1000 year-old walled hamlet and the 11th century Norman cathedral with the best preserved mosaic floors in southern Italy. You will have the opportunity to enjoy some free time and have lunch on your own. Then we board our motor coach and make our last stop in the beautiful area of Lecce – considered an architectural feast. An ancient settlement of the Messapii tribes, it is the principal Baroque city of Puglia. Baroque, in architecture, is a theatrical style begun in late 16th century Italy as a statement of the power of the Catholic Church in response to the Protestant Reformation. Tonight, dinner will be at a local restaurant or at the hotel. (B/D)

Day 7 – Oct 24th, 2019: CELLINO SAN MARCO

FREE DAY – enjoy the ground of the hotel and the spa ammenities. Lunch and Dinner are on your own tonight. (B)

Day 8 – Oct25th, 2019: CELLINO SAN MARCO-BARI- CELLINO SAN MARCO

This morning, after breakfast, we board our motor coach and travel to the metropolitan city of Bari. There, we will meet our Local Guide and enjoy a delightful walking tour of the city which includes the Norman -Swabian fortress and the 11th century cathedral that contains the remains of Saint Nicholas. You will have time to enjoy lunch on your own. After some free time, we will return to the hotel where we will dine for the evening. (B/D)

DAY 9 – Oct 26, 2019: CELLINO SAN MARCO-MATERA- SORRENTO

This morning, we depart bright and early after breakfast, for Sorrento for the next 3 nights. Along the way, we will make a stop to the “Sassi” of Matera, a spectacular agglomeration of cave dwellings built into the soft tufa stone of deep ravines. Matera has been inhabited since prehistoric times, there were 18,000 resident Sassi cave dwellers as recently as the 1950s when they were forcibly evacuated for inadequate sanitation. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the area has been repopulated, the homes renovated, many transformed into elegant hotels and restaurants. There will be time for you to enjoy lunch on your own. After our beautiful visit, we continue to Sorrento which sits high on a beautiful plateau where we are greeted by the sapphire blue gulf of Naples and the Majestic Mount Vesuvius. Tonight, after we get settled, we will have a relaxing Dinner at our Hotel. (B/D)

DAY 10– Oct 27, 2019: SORRENTO-NAPLES -SORRENTO

This morning, after breakfast, we will board our motor coach to visit the beautiful seaside city of Naples. Our Local Guide will join us to visit the Cappella Sansevero - a 16th-century chapel which showcases an eclectic collection of Italian religious art, from marble sculptures to eerie anatomical creations. The chapel was built by a local duke, Giovan Francesco di Sangro, as appreciation to the Virgin Mary for curing his illness. See the delicate pieces of marble sculpture on display, including the Veiled Christ. There are also frescoes, elaborate marble flooring and unusual and graphic anatomical works. Lunch on your own – however you can have the opportunity to enjoy a real Italian Pizza – the Pizza Margherita. Once you have tasted this pizza, you will want to try a warm, delicious Italian pastry – Sfogliatella. Tonight Dinner at the Hotel. (B/D)

DAY 11 – Oct 28th, 2019: SORRENTO

FREE DAY – Enjoy Sorrento and the surrounding towns and village on your own – our last day of the trip. You can enjoy lunch and dinner on your own but don’t forget to pack for tomorrow we head home. (B)

Day 12- Oct 29, 2019: DEPARTING FROM SORRENTO to FIUMICINO ROME AIRPORT TO USA

This morning, bright and early, we bid “ARRIVEDERCI to the Sorrento Coast” as we transfer to the airport in Rome for our return flight home. Departure from Rome is TBD (Italian time) on flight # AZ TBD(Alitalia Airlines) and arrives TBD (US Time) at JFK. We should arrive back in Hamden at the Wooster Street Travel parking area by TBD.
